Work through it in order
Confirm both water supply valves are open and both hoses connected
Whirlpool's own documentation is specific here: both the hot and cold inlet hoses need to be connected, and both valves fully open, for the washer to fill correctly, even on a cold-only cycle. A single valve that's only partway open is one of the more overlooked causes.
Check both inlet hoses for kinks
Trace each hose along its full length rather than just checking the connection points. A kink partway along the run restricts flow the same way a closed valve does.
Inspect the inlet screens
The inlet screens sit on the back of the water inlet valve and catch mineral buildup and debris from the water supply over time. Turn off the water, disconnect the hoses, and clean the screens gently with a soft brush, mild soap, and water, without removing the screen itself from its housing.
Check the drain hose position
This is the one fill-error cause that's easy to miss because it doesn't involve the fill side at all. If the drain hose is inserted more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe, it can siphon water back out of the tub nearly as fast as the washer fills it, which looks identical to a slow fill from the outside even though the supply path itself is completely clear.
Does Maytag's LF code mean the same thing?
Yes, based on both brands' own official support documentation. Whirlpool Corporation owns Maytag, and Whirlpool's and Maytag's LF pages describe the identical fault, the same supply-valve-and-hose causes, and the same F8 E1 and Lo Fl alternate display names, consistent with the two brands sharing manufacturing.
