How to tell if it's actually the spring
- A loud bang. Many homeowners hear a sharp bang, sometimes mistaken for a car backfiring or something falling, at the exact moment the spring breaks.
- The door won't lift more than a few inches. Without spring tension assisting it, the door becomes far too heavy for the opener or a person to lift normally.
- A visible gap in the coil of the torsion spring mounted above the door. A broken one shows a clear separation in the metal.
- The door feels dramatically heavier when lifted by hand, even for just a few inches.
- A cable that's loose or off the drum, the spool the lifting cable winds around. A broken spring can cause the cable to slacken or slip off it entirely.
A broken spring isn't the only reason a door can feel stuck. If the spring coil looks intact but the door is crooked or grinding rather than just heavy, a door that's come off its track instead is worth ruling out first. And if the spring looks fine and the door simply doesn't respond when you use the opener, it's worth checking why the door won't open at all before assuming a spring problem.
What not to do until it's repaired
Don't use the automatic opener to force the door open or closed. It can damage the opener motor and doesn't fix the actual problem.
